Halloween 2018: I, Tanna

Writer's picture: TannaTanna

I am SO EXCITED to share this costume with anyone! I put a lot of work into it and am honestly super surprised with how well it turned out! For anyone who doesn't know, I dressed up as Tonya Harding and made one of her figure skating costumes that she wore!

My best attempt of taking a photo indoors at night...

Margot Robbie from the I, Tonya movie cover

I, Tonya was one of my favorite movies I've seen this year, mostly because I thought Margot Robbie did such a great job! Tonya Harding's story happened in 1994, the year I was born, so I really knew nothing about what happened until watching the movie. It was super entertaining, and Margot's costumes matched exactly the costumes Tonya actually wore in the 90's! My boyfriend declined my suggestion that he dress up as Nancy Kerrigan and let me carry around a pipe as a prop, but he sadly refused :(

I decided to make the white outfit from the movie poster because it looked like it would be the most simple. I gathered all the supplies I would need: A white bodysuit, all the gold trim, tassels, white fabric for the skirt, sequin felt paper, jewels, and my secret weapon: FABRIC GLUE. I don't know how to sew, so fabric glue is the only way I pulled this thing off. I probably could sew, but I didn't have the time or patience for that right now, ha. Halloween time is hectic! Why is there so much going on right now?? I'm not the only one, right? Anyways, I went every step of the way being nervous that the costume wasn't going to end up looking good, and I just kept thinking to myself that I was crazy for doing this, haha.

So I basically just cut all this stuff out and glued it on to a body suit! The skirt was the most time-consuming part, but not really super difficult. I just had to make sure I glued everything ahead of time to give it all time to dry before the next layer/the time came that I had to wear it.

My only real dilemma was I didn't know what I was going to do about skates. The costume wouldn't be complete without a skate prop. Sooo this is kind of a difficult thing to acquire in Southern California as you can imagine! I was searching all of the local stores when I found this child's purse at Target! It's kind of cheesy, but it was my only option and it's honestly really cute. It was big enough to hold my phone and wallet at the party I went to, so it also came in handy in addition to completing the costume! And people got a kick out of it!

Thanks for coming in clutch, Target

I want to note that this is the one time my super frizzy/curly/wavy hair actually came in handy! What you see is allllll natural frizz ;) I actually had a co-worker tell me "and you even ratted your hair!!" and I had to just be like yeahhhhh........

I had so much fun making this costume, and I'm proud of my work and feel accomplished! People have been telling me to make costumes to sell on Etsy! I'll consider it...

I'd love to answer any questions you have about the process with my costume or just in general! Let me know in the comments below!

Happy Halloween.... Trick or Treat Yo' Self!

Love, Tanna
