Desert Daze: Salvation Mountain

Salvation Mountain
Love is Universal

Salvation Mountain is this dream of a place located in California's Imperial County. Located 3 hours from Los Angeles, Orange County, or San Diego, it is a must see! Don't let the drive intimidate you, because it is 100% worth it.

I have been wanting to go to Salvation Mountain since I discovered it on Pinterest circa 2012 (back when you had to be approved to join Pinterest- remember that?). I was lucky enough to have an adventurous friend who wanted to experience the mountain too, so we decided to make a day trip out of it! I was worried that it was going to be underwhelming and I was getting my hopes up to be let down, but when we drove up to the mountain I was in awe. It is more amazing in person than in photos.

The man who built Salvation Mountain had a goal to spread a message of Love to the world, so the entire mountain is covered in positive messages from the Bible and about love in general. No matter who you are or what you believe in, it is inspiring!

Salvation Mountain

Photographers and bloggers love Salvation Mountain because it provides an endless amount of backdrops for photos and looks great with so many different styles. You can really let your creativity run wild here (but not too wild- when climbing the mountain you have to stay on the yellow path that's above). I decided to wear a black and white edgy outfit, which provided a great contrast to the colorful backgrounds!

Salvation Mountain Car
More than a mountain, there are also cars and other equipment that are painted.

If you decide to go to Salvation Mountain, here are a couple things to keep in mind/watch for:

  • Check the weather before you go, and make sure you take plenty of water with you. I went in June and it was over 100 degrees. You're really far from the closest place to buy water out there!

  • If you do get too hot, stop on your way back and get a smoothie from a place called Mangos! in Coachella. Their tropical smoothie brought me back to life.

  • Look out for the hundreds of (what I thought were) giant palm trees that are actually date trees. Who knew date groves looked so cool?

  • If you're into apocalyptic stuff, check out the Salton Sea, which is a resort which was abandoned because of the water's toxicity. Everything in the area is super creepy. The "sand" is actually made of dead fish bones. I still get an eerie feeling any time I think about this place.

  • Along the same lines, look out for the awesome retro resort signs for Bombay Beach. They're super cool and I'm sad that heat exhaustion stopped me from getting some photos with them!

Have a beautiful weekend, make the most of it!
