5 Fashionable Halloween Costumes You can Make at Home

Writer's picture: TannaTanna

We're two weeks away from Halloweekend!

Every year when Halloween rolls around, I think to myself, I'm just going to do something simple for Halloween, and I'm not going to stress about it. Then, the week before Halloween, I get SUPER competitive and end up making something really last minute. I'm always looking out for ideas of stylish costumes that I can make at home, and I think I've been pretty successful in the past! So I wanted to share some of my best work for some inspiration. Let's get to creating!

1-2. Holly Golightly (Breakfast at Tiffany's)

I ADORE Audrey Hepburn. So it's no surprise that I've been Holly Golightly for Halloween twice. The first time, I was Holly from the beginning of Breakfast at Tiffany's, where she's looking into Tiffany's eating a croissant with coffee. Here are the photos for comparison:

Audrey in Breakfast at Tiffany's

This is such a simple and cute costume! Pretty much any LBD will do (just pretend it's a Givenchy dress like Audrey's), a tiara (someone you know has one), statement necklace and earrings, and a homemade cigarette holder! I made mine out of a chopstick painted black and masking tape on the end. Points if you can do a french twist in your hair!

The second time I dressed up as Holly Golightly, I was Holly in her night shirt and her famous, fabulous eye mask! I made this eye mask myself, but you can buy one pretty cheap online (just trust me when I say they don't look as good!)

Tassel earrings would have completed this look!

How I made the mask:

I bought a cheap, plain eye mask, and wrapped it in blue satin fabric that I bought at a craft store. I also bought all the other supplies I needed at the craft store: fabric glue, gold tassel, gold ribbon, and gold cord. I wrapped the eye mask in the satin fabric, and glued it to the back. Fabric glue is pretty strong! But be careful with the glue, because it can be messy. I know there's probably better ways to do this, but I don't have sewing skills, so glue worked for me! I trimmed the gold elements to the size I wanted them, and glued those on too.

Don't forget the martini glass if you want a prop! I got mine at the dollar store.

3. Cleopatra

This costume was born because I randomly found this amazing dress on clearance at Target. The neckline made it perfect for Cleopatra! I went all out with my jewelry and makeup, and even bought a wig for it. This costume also made me realize that I should never dye my hair black.

I used liquid or gel eyeliner, and made these Egyptian inspired lines around my eyes. I also used some really intense gold eyeshadow and fake lashes! You can’t see it, but I also wore a really cool snake cuff earring that I found at Claire’s.

Accessories list:

4. Mermaid

This one is slightly embarrassing, but I was in college at the time that I wore this, so I think it's totally acceptable. I admit this one could have been a little better had I given myself more time and money, but I still love this costume! If you're looking for something pretty simple, here it is.

I want to be where the people are...

I bought a cheap bathing suit top from Forever 21, and a little bag of scallop shells from a craft store. Luckily, my roommate at the time had a giant craft box which included a hot glue gun and some glitter glue, so I used that to glue the shells on the top! You have to let them dry thoroughly or they will tend to fall off, so don't attempt this the day before you're going to wear it!

The skirt I bought as-is from H&M, but it's no longer available. Similar ones linked below.

Mermaids don't wear shoes, obvi, so wear whatever you want! I also suggest checking Poshmark for a cheap skirt/bathing suit top for this costume.

The shells after I glued them.

For makeup, I used a green/blue eyeshadow mixture on my eyes, and also wore some pretty turquoise eyeliner. I attempted to use a fishnet/hairnet to create a pattern on my arms and body with the eyeshadow (you can sort of see this in the photo). There are many tutorials for this online! You do need a pretty intense shadow, or it won't show up well. I also glued a bobby pin to a starfish for my hair!

Costume Elements:

Similar skirts: Option 1 // Option 2 // Shells // Top- Check Poshmark, there are so many!

5. Pink Lady from Grease

Are you a Rizzo, Frenchy, Marty, or Sandy??

Last but definitely not least, this is one of my favorite costumes that I've ever made, even though I didn't technically "make" most of it. When I wore this last year, most people didn't realize that I actually painted this jacket myself. I was sad about that at the time because I wanted recognition, but now I realize what a compliment that was.

I used "soft" fabric paint so it is flexible and lays flat into the jacket!

The actual jackets from the movie that I copied.

I bought a pink bomber jacket at Forever 21 for pretty cheap (linked below), some black fabric paint, and I found a photo of the actual jackets from the movies to copy.

I wore a pair of ankle length black slacks and simple black heels (both linked below). The glasses I bought at Party City (I don't recommend going the day or week before Halloween- I had to go to a few stores before finding them in stock, which was annoying).

I bought a piece of leftover fabric from a craft store which made a perfect neck scarf! I had it cut in 16" x 16" size, but if you want it a bit bigger you can go up to 20" x 20". It's not hemmed so it frayed a bit, but it was perfect for Halloween (and not time consuming!)

Here's a better view of the scarf!

Costume Elements:

That's it! I hope you're inspired to create your own costume. My favorite part of Halloween is seeing what everyone decides to dress up as, and how they execute their costume! I'm still deciding what I'm going to dress up as this year, so that's tbd... Can't wait to see what everyone comes up with! Let me know if you decide to try one of these ideas! ☻
